Which Hair Oil Do You Actually Need? A Scalp-Type Guide

Blog banner showing different hair oils with a guide to choosing the right oil for your scalp type.

Walk into any pharmacy or scroll through any natural hair care shop and you’ll find a wall of oils, each claiming to fix everything at once. In reality, different oils solve different problems, an oil that’s excellent for a dry, flaky scalp can make an oily scalp worse, and an oil great for shine won’t do much for hair fall. The fastest way to get real results is to start with your actual concern, not the product with the best marketing.

Here’s a straightforward way to match your scalp and hair concern to the right natural oil.

Start Here: What’s Your Main Concern?

My scalp gets oily quickly, even a day after washing

Use: Jojoba Oil, occasionally alternating with Tea Tree Essential Oil (properly diluted in a carrier oil).

This feels counterintuitive, putting oil on an oily scalp, but jojoba’s molecular structure closely resembles natural sebum, which helps regulate oil production rather than adding to it. Tea Tree Oil helps keep excess buildup and bacteria in check between washes.

Avoid: Coconut Oil and Castor Oil as daily treatments, both are heavier and can make an already oily scalp feel greasier for longer.

My scalp is dry, flaky, and sometimes itchy

Use: Coconut Oil or Olive Oil as a weekly deep treatment, with Lavender Essential Oil (diluted) for the itching specifically.

Coconut Oil is one of the few oils that can penetrate into the hair shaft itself rather than just sitting on the surface, making it effective for genuine dryness. Olive Oil works similarly as a softer alternative. Lavender Oil’s anti-inflammatory properties help calm the itching and irritation that often comes with a dry scalp.

I have dandruff or a scalp that gets itchy/flaky in a specific, persistent way

Use: Tea Tree Essential Oil or Neem Essential Oil (both properly diluted in a carrier oil), used as a targeted 2–3x weekly treatment.

Dandruff is usually caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia fungus on the scalp. Tea Tree and Neem both have antifungal properties that directly target this, unlike purely moisturising oils which treat dryness but not the underlying fungal cause.

Note: If dandruff is severe, persistent, or accompanied by significant redness or pain, see a dermatologist, a home treatment routine works well for mild-to-moderate dandruff but isn’t a substitute for medical treatment of more serious scalp conditions.

My hair is thinning or I’m losing more hair than usual

Use: Rosemary Essential Oil and Castor Oil, ideally blended together, used consistently for at least 8–12 weeks before judging results.

These are the two oils with the most evidence behind them for hair growth support, rosemary for its circulation and DHT-blocking properties, castor for its ricinoleic acid content and follicle nourishment. This is a patience-required category: real changes take months, not days, and no oil replaces a dermatologist’s evaluation if hair loss is sudden, severe, or happening in distinct patches (which can indicate an underlying medical cause).

My hair is greying earlier than I’d like

Use: Amla Oil, used consistently over several months.

Amla oil is traditionally used to support the melanin-producing cells in hair follicles. It’s worth being realistic here: it may help slow further greying with consistent long-term use, but it does not reverse hair that has already turned grey, that pigment loss is permanent once it happens.

My hair is dry, frizzy, or damaged (heat styling, colour treatment)

Use: Argan Oil for lightweight shine and frizz control, or Almond Oil for slightly deeper conditioning without heaviness.

Argan Oil is particularly good for colour-treated hair and daily frizz control since it’s lightweight and won’t weigh hair down. Almond Oil penetrates a bit more and is a good option for genuinely dry or brittle strands, especially as an overnight treatment.

My hair is fine and gets weighed down easily by most oils

Use: Jojoba Oil or Argan Oil in small amounts (2–3 drops), applied only to mid-lengths and ends, never the roots.

Fine hair is the trickiest hair type for oiling, most oils will work, but only in small quantities and kept away from the scalp/roots, where even a light oil can flatten volume.

I want an all-round strengthening oil with a strong traditional/cultural track record

Use: Mustard Oil, especially if you’re following a traditional South Asian hair care routine.

Mustard Oil’s warming effect boosts scalp circulation more noticeably than most other oils, which is part of why it’s been a household staple for generations in Pakistan specifically. Its strong smell is the main trade-off, blending with a few drops of Rosemary or Lavender helps.

I want to grow or thicken a beard

A Note on Combining Oils

Most of the best routines use two oils, not one, a “base” oil for the main concern and a lighter oil or diluted essential oil for a secondary issue (e.g. Rosemary for growth + Jojoba for scalp balance if you have both thinning hair and an oily scalp). When combining essential oils (Rosemary, Lavender, Tea Tree, Neem) with a carrier oil, keep to a roughly 1:10 ratio, 2–3 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil, to avoid scalp irritation.
