Colour-treated hair has different needs from natural hair — the chemical processing involved in coloring opens the hair cuticle and can leave strands more porous, drier, and more prone to fading than hair that hasn’t been treated. Argan oil has become a go-to recommendation for colour-treated hair specifically, and there’s a genuine reason for that beyond just its popularity.
Why Colour-Treated Hair Needs Different Care?
The coloring process works by opening the hair’s outer cuticle layer to allow pigment to be deposited (or lifted, in the case of bleaching). This leaves the cuticle more porous than untreated hair, which has two consequences worth understanding:
- Increased moisture loss — porous hair loses moisture more easily, making colour-treated hair prone to dryness and brittleness.
- Colour fade — an open, porous cuticle also allows colour molecules to escape more easily, especially with washing, heat styling, and UV exposure.
How Argan Oil Helps?
Antioxidant protection. Argan oil is rich in Vitamin E and other antioxidants, which may help protect hair from some of the oxidative damage caused by chemical processing and ongoing environmental exposure (sun, pollution) that accelerates colour fade.
Cuticle smoothing. Argan oil’s lightweight fatty acid profile helps smooth the hair cuticle, which can partially close the surface and reduce how easily colour molecules and moisture escape.
Frizz and shine. Beyond colour protection specifically, argan oil addresses the frizz and dullness that often comes with colour-treated hair, giving it a healthier, glossier appearance even between treatments.
A Realistic Expectation
Argan oil supports and helps slow colour fade — it doesn’t prevent it entirely. Colour fade from washing, sun exposure, and general wear is a normal part of how hair colour behaves, especially with lighter or more vivid colours. Argan oil is a supportive part of a colour-care routine, not a substitute for colour-safe shampoo or reduced wash frequency, which matter just as much.
A Simple Weekly Routine for Colour-Treated Hair
- 2–3 times per week: apply a few drops of argan oil to damp or dry hair, focusing on mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, to smooth frizz and add shine.
- Once weekly: use a slightly more generous amount as a 20–30 minute deep treatment before washing, to give the antioxidant and conditioning benefits more time to absorb.
- Daily, in small amounts: 1–2 drops rubbed between palms and smoothed over the surface of dry hair works as a quick anti-frizz, anti-static finishing touch.
Pairing With Other Products
Argan oil works well alongside (not instead of) a colour-safe, sulfate-free shampoo — sulfates are particularly aggressive at stripping colour, so combining a gentler shampoo with regular argan oil use gives a more complete colour-preservation routine than either alone.
Beyond Colour-Treated Hair
Argan oil is also broadly useful for general frizz control, adding shine, and conditioning dry or heat-damaged hair, even without colour treatment being a factor — so it’s a versatile addition to most hair care routines, not a niche product only for colour-treated hair specifically.
